El desarrollo de los medios de comunicación digital hizo que las culturas de todo el planeta se pusieran una en frente de la otra. Las barreras de los idiomas no han sido obstáculo para el desarrollo de una especie de cultura global que va de la mano del mundo del Internet, el avance del turismo internacional, la apertura de mercados, la globalización de las economías e incluso las crisis financieras o los desastres ecológicos.
The development of the digital means of communication has made that the cultures of the entire planet face one each other. The language barriers are not an obstacule for the development of a sort of global culture that goes by the hand of the Internet world, the growing of the international tourism, the open markets, the global economies and even the financial crisis and ecological disasters.
Por esta razón, las sociedades actuales buscan ya no sólo comunicarse con otras, sino entenderse entre sí y fortalecer sus dinámicas culturales. Un hombre o mujer de negocios de hoy ya no circunscribe su accionar dentro de su ciudad, región o país, sino que se piensa en un mundo globalizado y esto hace que tenga que entrar en relación con costumbres, tradiciones, idiomas y demás de otras sociedades que incluso se encuentran al otro lado del planeta.
For this reason, the modern societies look not only communication among themselves, but also mutual understanding and the strengthening of their cultural dynamism. A modern man or woman of business does not keep his/her action to his/her city, region or country, but he/she thinks inside a global world, making that he/she comes in relation with customs, traditions, languages and other elements of societies that even are at the other side of the planet.
Elementos como la traducción se vuelven entonces de vital importancia en el desarrollo de una empresa, en la labor cotidiana de un emprendedor o en un turista internacional. No se trata sólo de elaborar una escueta traducción realizada con los instrumentos que nos pone la técnica a disposición (traducciones en línea, programas de traducción, traduce esta página...). Estos son y seguirán siendo una gran ayuda para sacarnos de un momento de emergencia. Pero son poco al momento de presentar una ponencia en un seminario internacional, una conferencia, un reporte para un jefe en el extranjero que no habla nuestra lengua o para diseñar un portal virtual en dos idiomas, como este.
Elements like the translation become then vital in the development of a company, in the daily life of an entrepreneur or an international tourist. It is not just to make a simple translation made with the tools developed by the modern technologies (translation on line, translation software, translate this page...) Those are and will be of great suppport for moments of emergency. But they are limited at the moment of giving a speech in an international congress, a conference, a report for that foreign boss who does not speak our language or designing a website in two languages, like this one.
El traductor humano seguirá siendo indispensable e irremplazable, aunque cada vez las sociedades globalizadas tienden a crear ciudadanos bilingües y políglotas, pero ello no le va a quitar el trabajo a los traductores humanos por una sencilla razón: traducir es un arte.
The human translator will be forever indispensable and irreplaceable, although the modern global societies are developing the tendence of bilingual and multilingual citizens, but that will not remove the job of human translators for a simple reason: translate is an art.
El arte de traducir tiene su historia desde el mismo momento en el cual las culturas entraron en contacto y descubrieron las barreras del idioma. Una de las más célebres evidencias de traducciones simultáneas de la historia la tenemos con la piedra de Rosetta del antiguo Egipto helénico y que fuera interpretada por Jean-François Champollion, especialmente. Se trata de una estela de granito con una inscripción en griego y en dos versiones linguisticas del antiguo egipcio. Hasta la interpretación de Champollion, el significado de la escritura egipcia antigua era desconocida para el mundo moderno. Lo que estaba escrito en griego ayudó a interpretar lo que estaba escrito en egipcio.
The art of translation has its history since the same moment in which cultures came in contact and realized the barriers of language. One of the most important evidence of simultaneous translations in history is the Rosetta Stone of the Ancient Greek Egypt and that was interpreted especially by Jean-François Champollion. It is a granite stele carved with inscriptions in Greek and two Egyptian languages. Before the Champollion's interpretation, the meaning of the ancient Egyptian scriptures were unknown to the modern world. What was writen in Greek helped to interpret what was writen in Egyptian.
Por otra parte, los libros más traducidos de la historia y a través de la historia, han sido las Escrituras o Biblia. Muchos de los textos bíblicos fueron escritos en hebreo, pero los más recientes lo fueron en arameo y en griego, lo que significa el gran encuentro de los antiguos israelitas con otros pueblos. Con el advenimiento del mundo helénico y la diáspora de Israel por el mundo antiguo, el griego se convirtió en la lengua franca de la cuenca del Mediterráneo. Ello llevó a una decadencia del hebreo, especialmente en los grupos judíos que vivían en tierras extranjeras. A medida que pasaban las generaciones, se hablaba menos hebreo y se utilizaba más el griego. Como consecuencia, la Biblia era cada vez menos comprensible. Por esta razón, a partir del siglo I adC, los judíos del Egipto helénico decidieron traducir la Biblia en griego, para que esta fuera comprendida por las nuevas generaciones que no hablaban ya hebreo. Esa histórica traducción y cuya labor duró hasta el siglo X dC. es conocida como "texto masorético" o "texto de la tradición".
At the other side, the most translated books in history and through history, have been the Scriptures (Bible). Many of the Biblical books were writen in Hebrew, but the most recent were in Aramaic and Greek, meaning the great interaction between the ancient Israelites with other peoples. With the coming of the Greek world and the diaspora of Israel to the ancient world, the Greek became the lingua franca of the Mediterranean Basin. It brought a decadence on the Hebrew language, especially to the Jew groups living in foreign lands. Generation by generation they spoke less Hebrew and more Greek. As a consequence, the Bible began to be less understood. For this reason, from the first century B.C., the Jews of the Greek Egypt decided to translate the Bible into that language in order to make it reachable for the new generations who did not talk Hebrew. This historic translation, whose work lasted until the 10th century A.C. is known as the "Masoretic Text" or "Text of the Tradition."
Traducir es pues un arte presente en todo el devenir histórico humano y tiene en sí una importancia social, política, religiosa, económica y humana fundamental. Si bien, existe y ha existido desde siglos la discusión sobre la validés de una traducción, muchos intelectuales repiten el viejo adagio italiano "tradurre è tradire" (traducir es traicionar). Si bien ello tiene su fundamento -- una traducción siempre será imperfecta simplemente porque no puede reflejar plenamente la idea del escritor original en su propia lengua --, este pensamiento puede ser acusado de elitista. Si usted dice que la única manera de leer a Gabriel García Márquez es en castellano y que cualquier traducción no es genuina, eso se le puede decir a los intelectuales en inglés que tienen la posibilidad de aprender castellano para leer al autor, pero no a todo el común de la gente en habla inglesa. Para ellos es necesario aplicar el arte de la traducción, lo más cerca posible al pensamiento del autor original. La traducción como una pintura que refleja la realidad, por más bella que sea, no es la realidad misma, pero puede encantar.
Translate is then an art and it has been present along the whole human evolution. It has itself an important role in society, politics, religion, economics and humanity. Although, there is and there was since ever a discussion about the validity of a translation, many scholars use to point out the old Italian saying "tradurre è tradire" (translate is betray.) Even if that has its ground -- a translation will be always imperfect, just because it can not reflect the entire idea of the original writer in his own language, -- this thought can be accused of elitist. If you say that the only way to read Gabriel García Márquez is in Spanish and that any translation of his work is not authentic, that can be said by English-speaking scholars who have the possibility to learn Spanish just to read the author, but not by the common of the English-speaking people. For this reason it is necessary to apply the art of translation in the best way to be near to the thought of the original writer. The translation, as a painting, reflect the reality and, even if it is a beautiful painting, it is not the reality, but it keeps something about it.

El traductor humano seguirá siendo indispensable e irremplazable, aunque cada vez las sociedades globalizadas tienden a crear ciudadanos bilingües y políglotas, pero ello no le va a quitar el trabajo a los traductores humanos por una sencilla razón: traducir es un arte.
